2021 година е определена от Европейския съюз за Европейска година на железопътния транспорт. Целта на Съюза е да насърчи използването на влакове като безопасна и устойчива форма на превоз. С оглед на това, че транспортът отговаря за една четвърт от емисиите на парникови газове на ЕС, най-малък процентът от тях се пада на железопътния транспорт, който е до голяма степен електрифициран. Той е и единственият вид транспорт, който е намалил значително емисиите си от 1990 г. насам.
Железопътният транспорт играе голяма роля при сближаването на определени региони, при превоза на различни товари, също така и за развитието на туризма. Въпреки това само 7% от пътниците и 11% от стоките се превозват с влак. Пред железопътния сектор стоят проблеми като остарялата инфраструктура, високите разходи за поддръжка на материалната база и разчитането на стари бизнес модели.
От 2014 г. насам финансовата подкрепата на Европейския съюз за железопътния транспорт е надхвърлила 35 млрд. евро. Средставата се осигуряват, за да се подобри качеството на услугата и да се изпълни целта на ЕС за значително увеличаване на превозите на пътници и стоки с влакове, което е и една от целите на Зеления пакт.
ЕС се старае да направи железопътният транспорт по привлекателен, като осигури по-голяма честота на влаковете, по-голяма информираност сред гражданите за ползите от този вид транспорт и разбира се, осигуряване на комфорт .
